Week 1 - April 13 - MacGregor slays the Champions

The 2019 season began on Saturday at Rectory Road, where champions of the last two years Wivenhoe welcomed Colchester & E.E., with the twenty two players braving the bracing April temperatures of 7c, a raw Easterly and occasional sleet showers !

Winning the toss, Colchester elected to field first and soon reaped rewards as debutants Charlie Watts (2 for 39) and Harry McBreaty (1 for 22) reduced the hosts to 37 for 3. Dirk Bruwer (35 from 53 balls) and James Butcher (25 from 32 balls) steadied the innings with a 53 run partnership for the fourth wicket. The introduction of Denson Narayan (3 for 21 from 8 overs) and Rahul Viswanath (3 for 30 from 8) then saw the Hoe collapse to 118 for 9. An unbroken last wicket stand of 33 between Harry Burnett (18no) and Liam Fields (13no), saw Wivenhoe reach a third batting point and close their innings at 151 for 9. However, the target became academic as Colchester opener Joe MacGregor smashed an unbeaten 103 from 52 balls, including six maximums. An unbroken fourth wicket stand of 59 with Narayan (21no) seeing the visitors to a seven wicket success in just the 18th over. Journeyman Ryan Savill, who played for Colchester at the end of last year, suffered an afternoon to forget, after a six ball duck with the bat, he saw his solitary over dispatched for 26, as MacGregor raced to his century.
The two sides meet again at Castle Park this coming Sunday with the weather forecast, thankfully for the players and umpires, looking to be considerably warmer.
