Glorious weather in the week saw the 2018 NECL season finally get underway on Sunday, following cancellations of both the Colchester & E.E. versus Wivenhoe fixtures scheduled in the previous fortnight. The champions Wivenhoe, made the short journey to Elmstead for an intriguing derby.
Ten man Elmstead won the toss and batted first, and with Craig Perrin (50) and Elliot Mann (69) both compiling half centuries, a solid base for a competitive total was constructed. However, no other batsmen topped twenty in the innings, as Wivenhoe fought back through the bowling of Harry Burnett (3 for 31). Zac Pushman (18), Dan White (17) and Ryan Vickery (15) struck late order cameos for the hosts as Elmstead closed on 214 for 8. The Wivenhoe reply mirrored the Elmstead innings, with a solid opening stand between Matt Durrell (50) and Jakob Kelly (43) giving them a good start. However, once Dan White (2 for 42) and Ryan Vickery (1 for 37) had claimed the wickets of the openers, it was Jordan Elliott who took centre stage with the first fivefer of the season, with a spell of 5 for 47. Keeper Elliot Mann claimed three dismissals at the wicket to back up his earlier half century, as Wivenhoe were contained to 198 for 9 in reply. Joseph Nicholls (23) and Jamie Barry (20) were the only other players to top twenty for the visitors.
Centuries and Five Wickets

There are two matches scheduled in Division One this coming Sunday, as Elmstead look for a second victory with a trip to Castle Park to play Colchester & East Essex, while Copdock & Old Ipswichian make their first top flight appearance in five seasons with a trip to Clacton. The T20 competition begins with a West Division fixture starting at 2pm, between Braintree and T20 newcomers Galleywood.
